Tarot as Philosopher s Stone

In Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, there is a strong belief that the elements make up the world as well as our bodies. In Western magic, the elements are the cornerstone of all magical practices because they are believed to be the basis of all life. In the Renaissance period, it was believed that the greatest magical prize, the Philosophers Stone, was obtained when the elements were combined in the right proportions. The Philosopher s Stone meant many things to many people. Essentially it could do anything you wanted it to do, such as cure illnesses or change base metal into gold. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that by harmonizing the elements in your body, you can achieve the best of health. We can also seek emotional balance by uniting the elements. Since the Middle Ages, Western culture has ascribed certain personality traits to the four elements: air, fire, water, earth. Often the people we choose as friends provide an elemental personality that balances the element/s that are missing in our own personality. Check the table above to see which elements are strong in
your own personality makeup. To attain a balance in your life, experiment with what it would take to incorporate into your life the positive personality traits of the other elements. Creating an element chart will help you see which elemental characteristics are strong or weak in your life. Draw a circle and quarter it. Label each quarter as an element, starting from the top left hand side. Include other personality traits that you feel suit the elements. Look at what elements your friends and lover represent. This may provide you with invaluable insight as to the dynamics of your relationships.
